Semiotics is the study of communication through signs. Signs are anything that stands for something other than itself. This is very important to visual communicators. Designers use signs almost daily but we don’t normally stop to identify how they are classified within semiotics. Signs are used to convey a desired meaning to a specific audience. Different cultures and societies have systems and rules needed to create a desired effect. Understanding the how meaning is constructed and understood is important to create a successful sign.
This is a map of a few of the signs associated with vaccinations. The signs are a mixture of my creations and found images. Icons, Indexes, and symbols are all represented. It is organised in a scatter plot graph because each axis represents a gradient that the signs exist on. Within the scatter plot are groups of like signs. I started analog by drawing the signs and taping them onto a graph.
